"Changing region" means three different things in League of Legends: transferring your account to a different server (costs 2,600 RP), changing your Riot Account's region of residence (free eligibility tool), or creating a new account on another server (free). Which one you need depends on what you're actually trying to do.

## Option 1: Transfer Your Account to a Different Server

A server transfer moves your existing account (your champions, skins, and rank history) to a different regional server. It costs **2,600 RP** and is purchased directly in the League of Legends client.

1. Open the **League of Legends client** (not the Riot Client launcher)
2. Click the **Store** icon
3. Go to the **Account** tab
4. Select **Transfer** and choose your destination server
5. Confirm the purchase

The transfer is one-way: transferring back costs another 2,600 RP. There's also a **90-day cooldown** between transfers, and transfers are unavailable while a destination server is patching.

### What Transfers vs. What Doesn't

| Transfers with you | Does not transfer |
| ---------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| Champions and skins | Ranked placement (you replay placements) |
| Blue Essence and RP | Ranked Split Points |
| Friends list | Clash Club affiliations |
| Champion Mastery | Clash Match History |
| Honor Level | Your Shop offers |
| Clash Trophies | |
| Eternals and Challenges progress | |
| Hidden MMR (adapted to new server) | |

Your ranked placement resets but your MMR carries over, adapted to the new server's population. You'll play placement matches and land in roughly the right tier based on that MMR.

## Option 2: Change Your Riot Account Region of Residence

This is a separate setting from which LoL server your account plays on. Your Riot Account has a "region of residence" that affects your payment currency and which games you can access. To check or change it, go to [account.riotgames.com](https://account.riotgames.com/?ref=blog.loltheory.gg) and look for the region eligibility tool. Not all region changes are permitted, and some may affect progression in other Riot games.

## Option 3: Play on a Different Server for Free

If you just want to try another server, create a new Riot account and select the region during setup. Your existing Riot login credentials work across all regions, but each region is a separate LoL account, so you'll start fresh with no [champions](https://blog.loltheory.gg/how-to-unlock-champions-in-lol/), rank, or progression.

## VPNs Don't Change Your LoL Server

A VPN masks your IP address but does not move your account to a different server. You'll still play on whichever server your account is registered to, just with worse ping. Using a VPN to circumvent regional restrictions also risks violating Riot's Terms of Service. The only way to legitimately play on a different server is a transfer (paid) or a new account (free).

## LoL Server List

Riot operates servers in North America (NA), Europe West (EUW), Europe Nordic & East (EUNE), Latin America North (LAN), Latin America South (LAS), Brazil (BR), Korea (KR), Japan (JP), Oceania (OCE), Turkey (TR), Russia (RU), Southeast Asia (SEA), the Middle East (ME), Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau (TW), and Vietnam (VN). Not all region pairs support direct transfer; some routes require an intermediate transfer or aren't available.
