Swiftplay is League of Legends' permanent casual queue on Summoner's Rift. You start at level 3 with 1,400 gold, objective timers are sped up (Baron at 12:00, only two drakes spawn, no Voidgrubs or Atakhan), and Sudden Death caps games at 36 minutes. It replaced Quickplay in 2025 and uses your Blind Pick MMR. Riot's stated pre-rework average was 24:45; the Season 2026 rework cut it further. The rest of this guide covers the current ruleset, how it differs from Normal SR and ARAM, what changed in Season 2026, and whether it's actually good for practice.

## How Swiftplay Replaced Quickplay

The casual SR queue has been renamed twice in three years:

- **Blind Pick**, the original casual mode, was removed in patch 13.22 (October 2023).
- **Quickplay** replaced Blind Pick and added pre-game champion and role selection so matchmaking could fill lobbies faster. It was removed worldwide in patch 25.07.
- **Swiftplay** launched in patch V25.S1.1 (January 2025) in pilot regions, then went global in V25.07 alongside Quickplay's removal. It was reworked in V26.01 (Season 2026) into the much faster mode it is today.

**Quickplay made matchmaking faster. Swiftplay made the games themselves faster.** Quickplay games were standard 30-plus-minute SR matches with a quicker lobby; Swiftplay accelerates the actual gameplay through objective timers, gold and XP multipliers, and a Sudden Death system that forces a finish.

## Swiftplay Rules and Mechanics

The rules below reflect the current state of the mode as of the V26.07 April hotfix.

### Starting state

- Champions start at **level 3** with **1,400 gold**.
- **Doran's Blade, Doran's Ring, and Doran's Shield are disabled.** In their place, four Guardian's items (Blade, Hammer, Horn, Orb) are the starting items.
- The same 20-champion expanded free pool is available to new players in addition to the weekly rotation.

### Objective timers

- **Turret plates** fall at **10:00**.
- **Baron Nashor** spawns at **12:00**.
- **Elder Dragon** spawns at **15:00** and then every 6 minutes. If an Elemental Drake is in the pit when Elder is about to spawn, that Drake despawns.
- Only **two Elemental Drakes** spawn in the whole game. The first one killed triggers the Elemental Rift transformation; the type of the second Drake decides the element. **Dragon Soul requires 2 stacks instead of 4.**
- **Voidgrubs, Rift Herald, and Atakhan do not spawn** in Swiftplay.

### Minion and jungle changes

- **Minions gain upgrades 50% faster.** After 11:35, waves spawn every 25 seconds instead of 30.
- **Siege Minions** spawn every wave after the third, instead of every three waves. One Melee Minion is removed on those waves to balance the spawn count.
- **Minion Frenzy:** when you get a champion takedown you gain the Inspiring Champion buff for 90 seconds. The first minion you walk near consumes the buff and becomes an Inspired Minion (bonus movement speed, doubled attack speed, and a damage multiplier against minions and turrets), which then spreads the buff to nearby allied minions.
- **Jungle camps** respawn faster: small camps at 120s (down from 135), Blue and Red Buff at 270s (down from 300).
- **Jungle Companion** evolves at 15 treats (first upgrade) and 25 treats (final upgrade) instead of 30.
- **Shared jungle gold:** nearby allies get 30% of non-epic jungle camp gold, on top of the killer's full reward.

### Comeback mechanic (rubberbanding)

Swiftplay's rubberbanding system kicks in at 00:30\. It increases gold and XP for the losing side and decreases the bounty paid out for killing low-resource enemies. It can't more than double a single source of gold or XP, and it ignores gold generated by champion abilities (Draven's League of Draven, Gangplank's Your Cut, and similar). Combined with the shorter game length, this is why comebacks feel more frequent in Swiftplay than in ranked.

### Surrender

The wiki's main page still lists 15 minutes for the early surrender vote, but that's stale. Per the V26.02 patch history and Riot's own support article (updated January 2026):

- **Early surrender** opens at **12:00** and requires 4 of 5 votes (70%).
- **Standard surrender** opens at **25:00** and requires 3 of 5 votes (50%).

### Sudden Death

Swiftplay has a hard end-of-game mechanic to stop matches dragging:

- **20:00:** Overcharged begins. Turrets lose 35% of total armor and magic resist per minute.
- **22:00:** Sudden Death warning announcement.
- **25:00:** every targetable structure except the Nexus loses 3.3% of its maximum health every 2 seconds. Games end at exactly 36:00 if no team has won.

| **Ranked** | No | No (Ranked Solo/Flex are separate) | No |
| **MMR pool** | Inherited from Blind Pick | Normal Draft | Separate ARAM MMR |

The biggest practical difference is the champion-select system. In Swiftplay you commit to a champion before queueing, you can't ban anything, and the same champion can appear on both teams. That keeps lobbies fast but means it does not teach you how to draft. For a full breakdown of each mode, see [what is ARAM](https://blog.loltheory.gg/what-is-aram/), the 4-team free-for-all in [what is Arena](https://blog.loltheory.gg/what-is-arena/), and our [League of Legends game modes](https://blog.loltheory.gg/league-of-legends-game-modes/) hub for the complete overview.

## Does Swiftplay Give More XP?

It depends which XP you mean. There are three separate systems and Swiftplay only changes one of them:

- **In-game champion XP** (leveling 1 to 18 during the match): **yes**, multipliers from every source (kills, minions, jungle) are increased and the multipliers scale up as the game goes on. This is why level 18 is reachable in a sub-30-minute game.
- **Account XP** (your summoner level): **no Swiftplay-specific boost**. Per Riot's published XP breakdown, account XP for Normal PvP is time-based. A 30-minute win earns roughly 204 XP and a 30-minute loss earns about 167\. Swiftplay games are shorter, so the XP-per-game is lower, but the XP-per-minute is comparable.
- **Battle Pass XP:** Swiftplay counts as a matchmade game. Riot has not published a per-mode BXP differentiator.

Blue Essence, Champion Mastery, Eternals, Missions, Challenges, and Honor all work in Swiftplay. There was a bug at launch (V25.S1.1) that briefly broke Mastery, Challenges, Eternals, and Missions progression, but Riot patched it within the same patch cycle.

## Does Swiftplay Have MMR?

Yes. Per Riot's support article, Swiftplay uses the MMR you had in Blind Pick. It inherited the rating when Quickplay was replaced, and it does not affect your ranked MMR. If you've never played a Blind Pick or Swiftplay game, you start at the default seed and your first few matches calibrate from there. For how to read MMR generally, see the [MMR guide](https://blog.loltheory.gg/how-to-check-lol-mmr/). ARAM uses the same separate-queue-MMR pattern, covered in our [ARAM MMR](https://blog.loltheory.gg/aram-mmr/) guide.

## Is Swiftplay Good for Practice?

The community is split. Some players treat Swiftplay as the ideal casual mode; others argue it's a failure for ranked practice. Both views are right for different goals.

**Swiftplay is good practice for:**

- Learning a new champion's kit. You're guaranteed the champion you pre-picked and you get to level 18 inside one game.
- Itemization experimentation. Multiple full builds across one session is realistic.
- Late-game team-fight reps and objective sequencing.
- Casual play between ranked sessions, when ranked tilt risk is high.

**Swiftplay is not good practice for:**

- **Laning phase.** Starting at level 3 with cannon minions arriving every wave from the fourth wave onward produces wave states that do not occur in ranked. Wave management instincts you build in Swiftplay will not transfer cleanly.
- Draft and ban decisions. There is no draft.
- Macro reps under real pressure. Sudden Death and rubberbanding compress the mid-to-late game in ways ranked does not.
- Mental warmup for ranked. The absence of LP at stake changes how your opponents play.

## What Changed in Season 2026

The 2026 reworks transformed Swiftplay from a mildly faster SR into the fully accelerated mode it is now. The relevant patches:

- **V26.01 (Season 2026 launch):** Starting level moved from 1 to 3, starting gold raised to 1,400, Guardian's items replaced Doran's items, Minion Frenzy added, jungle camp respawns and Companion treats reduced, Sudden Death onset moved from 30:00 to 25:00.
- **V26.02:** Early surrender time reduced from 15:00 to 12:00.
- **V26.07 + April 2 hotfix:** bug fixes restored Voidgrubs to not spawning at 8:00 (they were appearing by mistake), stopped Dragons from despawning on any damage taken, and brought back Siege Minions on every wave after the third.

## Should You Play Swiftplay?

Play Swiftplay when you want a complete LoL game in under 25 minutes, want guaranteed access to a specific champion without drafting, want to test item builds at scale, or want to play casually without ranked stakes. Skip it when you're warming up for ranked, when you want to drill laning phase, or when you actually want the slow strategic build-up of a full Summoner's Rift game.

The mode is permanent, uses its own MMR, and rewards everything except ranked LP, which makes it the closest thing LoL has to a daily-driver casual queue. Whether it deserves a slot in your rotation depends entirely on what you want out of a session.
