League of Legends has 21 level borders, starting with Piltover at level 1 and ending with Eternus at level 500. After level 75, a new border unlocks every 25 levels until Eternus. Riot has not added any borders past 500.
All 21 LoL Level Borders
Each border is a decorative frame that sits around your summoner icon on your profile, the friend list hovercard, and the loading screen. Borders use Runeterra region and skinline themes, with the visual style refreshing every 100 levels.

| 300 | Ionia |
| 325 | Bilgewater |

How the Unlock Schedule Works
The first three borders use special thresholds: you start at Piltover (level 1), unlock Zaun at the ranked-eligibility milestone (level 30), then Hextech at 50. After that, every border is exactly 25 levels apart. If you know your current level, your next border is at the next multiple of 25.
The visual style resets every 100 levels (100, 200, 300, 400, 500), so each centennial milestone gets a new look.
How Long It Takes to Unlock Each Border
Average XP per Summoner's Rift game is roughly 175 XP. The exact formula for an SR win at level 30+ is (seconds × 0.11) + 9.24. A 30-minute win comes out around 207 XP, a 30-minute loss closer to 175.
| Range | Total XP | Approximate Games (30-min SR) |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 to 30 | ~39,936 | ~230 games |
| Level 30 to 50 | ~61,152 | ~350 games |
| Each 25-level border interval (75+) | ~80,000 | ~450 games |
Game length, mode, and win/loss all change the rate. ARAM, Quickplay, and the rotating mode pool give different XP curves than ranked or normal Summoner's Rift. These are rough estimates, not exact targets.
Where Borders Show Up
Level borders appear in three places:
- Your profile page (around your summoner icon)
- Your friend list hovercard when others view it
- The match loading screen
They do not appear in-game on the HUD, on the scoreboard, or on the death recap. The frame stays the same regardless of which summoner icon you have equipped.
What Happens After Level 500
Eternus is the final border. There are no new level borders past 500, and Riot has not announced any. Leveling continues, and the Legend emote cycle repeats every 25 levels through level 1000, but no fresh border unlocks.
Mythic Essence rewards used to drop every 50 levels (10 ME per drop), but Riot removed that in patch V25.S1.1 (Season 1 2025). Champion Capsules at level milestones were removed in the same patch. Mythic Essence is now obtained through the Sanctum and other premium paths only. The current sources are covered in how to get Mythic Essence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there a red border around my screen in League of Legends?
That's the low-health warning effect: a red pulsing vignette around the screen edges that activates when your champion drops to a critical HP threshold. It is unrelated to level borders, which only appear on profile, friend list, and loading screens.
What level do you need to rank in LoL?
Account level 30 unlocks both ranked queue and the Zaun border. Everything else about climbing is covered in our ranks guide.
Can you still get the Warring Kingdoms border?
Yes. Every level border is permanent and account-wide. None of them are time-limited. Warring Kingdoms unlocks automatically when your account reaches level 225.
Do level borders give rewards beyond the visual?
The border itself is cosmetic. Some milestone levels also grant other items, like the Glorious Legend Ward Skin at level 100 and various Legend emotes through the cycle. The border frame is a visual unlock with no in-game effect.
Will Riot add borders past level 500?
No new borders past Eternus are currently planned. As of 2026, Riot has not announced post-500 progression.
