How to Change Your Riot ID in League of Legends (2026)

How to change your Riot ID in League of Legends

Go to account.riotgames.com, find the Riot ID section, type your new name, and click Save Changes. It's free, and you can do it once every 90 days.

Your Riot ID is the display name other players see in League of Legends, Valorant, TFT, and every other Riot game. It's account-wide, so changing it once changes it everywhere. The system replaced Summoner Names on November 20, 2023.

Riot ID vs. Summoner Name vs. Login Username

These three names cause the most confusion. Here's how they differ:

NameWhat it isCan you change it?Who sees it?
Riot ID (Game Name)The display name before the # in all Riot gamesYes, free every 90 daysEveryone
TaglineThe suffix after the # (e.g., #NA1)Yes, free every 90 daysEveryone
Login usernameThe email or username you sign in withNo (permanent)Only you

Your full Riot ID looks like PlayerName#NA1. The Game Name (before the #) doesn't need to be globally unique on its own. Two players can share the same Game Name as long as their taglines are different.

Summoner Names were the old League-only display names, retired in November 2023. When the transition happened, your first Summoner Name became your Game Name, and your server region became your default tagline (e.g., #NA1, #EUW).

How to Change Your Riot ID

  1. Go to account.riotgames.com and sign in
  2. Find the Riot ID section on your account page
  3. Enter a new Game Name, a new tagline, or both
  4. Click Save Changes

You can also get there from inside the League client: open the Store, click the Account button, and select "Riot ID Change." This redirects you to the same account.riotgames.com page.

Understanding Your Tagline

The tagline is the 3-5 character code after the # in your Riot ID. By default, it's set to your server region (like #NA1 or #EUW).

You can change your tagline to any 3-5 alphanumeric string, but there's a catch: once you change away from a region code, you can never switch back to any region code. The blocked taglines are BR, LAS, LAN, OCE, NA, EUW, EUNE, TR, RU, KR, JP, PBE, BR1, LA1, LA2, OC1, NA1, ME, TW, VN, and SEA (Riot support).

Changing just the tagline (without touching the Game Name) still starts the full 90-day cooldown.

How Often Can You Change Your Riot ID?

You get one free change every 90 days, measured from your last change. There is no paid option to change it sooner.

The one exception: if you're being harassed or someone is impersonating you, you can submit a Riot Support ticket to request an additional change outside the cooldown.

Before November 2023, changing your name cost 1,300 RP or 13,900 Blue Essence. That system is gone.

Why Is My Riot ID Unavailable?

If you see "That Riot ID is unavailable," it means:

  • Someone else already has that exact Game Name + tagline combination. Try a different tagline, or adjust the spelling of the Game Name.
  • The name contains a forbidden term. Riot blocks offensive, inappropriate, or trademarked names (including the word "Riot").
  • The name violates character limits. Game Names must be 3-16 characters. Taglines must be 3-5 alphanumeric characters.
  • You're trying to impersonate a pro player or public figure. Riot restricts names that could be mistaken for well-known players.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it free to change your name in LoL?

Yes. Riot ID changes have been free since November 2023. You don't need RP or Blue Essence.

Is my Riot ID the same as my Summoner Name?

Your old Summoner Name became the Game Name portion of your Riot ID during the November 2023 transition. Summoner Names no longer exist as a separate system.

Can I change my Riot ID before 90 days?

Only by contacting Riot Support with a valid reason like harassment or impersonation.

What happens to my old Riot ID?

The exact Game Name + tagline combination you abandon becomes available for someone else to claim. Game Names don't need to be unique on their own, so others may already be using the same Game Name with a different tagline.
